Our Founding Story
“Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan Pune (BNP Pune) is devoted to making a difference in the community by way of working for women and children welfare. Founded in 1979, by dedicated and like-minded women volunteers under the able leadership of Leela Shintre. BNP Pune has become a societal leader in the local community. We started our work with a conviction that overall progress of a society depends on the status of a common woman and strengthening her in all respects will lead to the development of community.
Initially, the nature of work was focused on creating public awareness among women by organizing health and cultural programs in Pune city and district. The emphasis was always on quality improvement and on use of technology.
We were the first ones to start computer courses in 1993 in an undeveloped area like Dighi (about 18 KMs from Pune city).
which was a village then. Novel Skill development courses like hand embroidery on the woollen cloth were successfully runway back in 1997 and many got self- employment after the training. The programs of vocational and computer training are continued till date, now on a larger scale and in diverse fields ranging from mid nursing to computerized machine embroidery, to PCB assembly. One more dimension was added to our work when, BNP Pune, in 2006, started ladies hostel facility in Dighi as a safe and secure place for students, working women and senior citizens.
We were carrying out occasional programs like summer vacation camps and hobby workshops, science promotion programs for children since 1976 well before we formally founded BNP. We also started regular activities like Abhyasika (self- study center), and Science Projects from 2006. Our Speech Correction Centre caters for counseling and Guidance to the Hearing Challenged. BNP Pune is focusing on the age group of 12-18 years through Project for Adolescents as a need of the day.
Our alumni are now grown up and responsible citizens leading successful life. Many young qualified women are volunteering for this noble cause and are ready to take this endeavor ahead. Our stability results from the dedication and hard work of committed volunteers and many individuals, organizations and foundations, who financially support us.”
